VISCERAL TREATMENT by Josephine Metreau

Here at Barney Flannery’s I often include visceral treatment when dealing with patients if I believe it appropriate to the condition with which they are presenting.

Visceral treatment is a range of osteopathic techniques used to help restore good function to all organs through the application of deep pressure and stretching techniques. Patients may or may not be experiencing symptoms in relation to these organs.

Visceral treatment can assist in treating:

-digestive organs: constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, acid reflux, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, haemorrhoids, etc.

-cardio respiratory organs: asthma, chronic bronchitis, breathlessness, palpitations, after a stroke, etc.

-gynaecologic organs: chronic infections, period disorders (pain, heavy flow after deliveries, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhoea, etc)

-urinary organs: chronic kidney infections, kidneys stones, chronic urinary infections, etc.

As there are a lot of neurological, circulatory, muscle and tissue connections between the organs and the rest of the body they can affect each other. For example, a patient could suffer from low back pain because of constipation.

Visceral treatment also focuses on the treatment of scar tissue (C-section, orthopaedic surgery, cancer surgery, by-pass, bariatric gastric sleeve, hysterectomy, ovariectomy, cardiac surgery, etc). Scar tissue is less pliable than normal skin and can act as a compression stocking causing structures such as muscle, tissue and joints to tighten around the area. As a consequence, it could have an impact on body balance, posture and the correct functioning of organs concerned.
